Yamal messaged Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi amid contract update | All Football

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has been tipped to follow in the footsteps of legend Lionel Messi and become world number one.

The Spanish winger is arguably one of the world’s most exciting youngsters since breaking through to the Catalan giants’ first team. Yamal, 17, has already made over 70 appearances for the club, scoring 13 goals.

He is in the midst of an exciting campaign having netted six times and provided 12 assists in all competitions. That form comes after the youngster won Euro 2024 with Spain.

Yamal has just 18 months left on his contract at the Camp Nou and Manchester City are said to be keen to sign him. But his agent Jorge Mendes has ensured that he will draw up a new deal and has encouraged the youngster to emulate Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to become the best player in the world.

“He has to follow the good examples, like Cristiano and Messi, who are almost 40 years old still competing. He has the talent to be number one,” said the senior agent from Portugal. “Lamine is a Barça player and will be for many years.”

Mendes also claimed that Yamal was the best player in the world in 2024, but his tender years prevented him from taking the big personal awards. He added: “Lamine Yamal has been the best, but he has also suffered in his youth because many people who vote thought that he is 17 years old and that he will have time to win these awards.”

And while Mendes has had plenty to say about his client, Yamal has also offered an update on his future. Speaking in an interview with Marca earlier this year, he confirmed that he was not considering leaving anytime soon.

“No, I’m not really thinking about that. Only about Barca, improving and winning titles here,” he said. “I dream of winning titles with Barça and that my family is doing well. Bringing back the Champions League is a dream come true.”

Barcelona will certainly be hoping Yamal can continue his hot form over the coming weeks. The Catalan giants take on Spain’s Barbastro in the Copa del Rey this weekend ahead of a Super Cup clash with Athletic Bilbao.

Their next league game pits them against Getafe next month. Barcelona are currently third in the table and three points behind Atletico Madrid.
