Wolves 2-0 Manchester United: Ruben Amorim suffers new low as Bruno Fernandes sent off in Premier League defeat at Molineux

Bruno Fernandes was sent off for the third time this season as Wolverhampton Wanderers secured a vital win over Manchester United to boost their survival hopes with a 2-0 win at Molineux.

United’s best chance to open the game in the first half came from Diogo Dalot, who forced Wolves keeper Jose Sa into a stunning diving save with an effort just outside the area heading into the top right corner.

Wolves forced Andre Onana into a solo save when a high ball into the United box found Jørgen Strand Larsen, whose header looked set to curl into the top corner before Onana managed to tip it away.

United were dealt a blow soon after the restart when Bruno Fernandes received his second yellow card of the game for a foul on Nelson Semedo, with Wolves finding the net soon after – only for Strand Larsen’s header to be ruled out for offside.

The hosts finally broke the deadlock as Matheus Cunha headed home Onana’s corner, prompting disbelief from both the United keeper and Wolves goalscorer.

Despite a late push from Ruben Amorim’s side which saw Harry Maguire’s header claimed by Jose Sa, it was Vitor Pereira’s charges who would score a second as a quick break saw Matheus Cunha pass to Hwang Hee-chan, who shot through Onana.

The Red Devils drop to 14th in the Premier League, with their losing streak extended to three games in all competitions, while Wolves have climbed out of the relegation zone to claim all three points.

Talking Point – United’s woes continue under Amorim

Just one win in five league games means Manchester United continue their mid-winter slump.

Marcus Rashford was left out of United’s squad for a fourth successive game, with an imminent exit likely on the cards, while Rasmus Hoylund was largely absent throughout and no words were exchanged between Amorim and Fernandes after the latter’s third dismissal of the season . .

Man of the Match – Matheus Cunha (Wolves)

A goal and an assist could probably sum up Cunha’s game quite well, but apart from adding to his respective tallies, Cunha was constantly causing problems for United’s backline, including Bruno Fernandes picking up his first yellow card in first period.
