Thanks Kamal FBREF We used PSxG minus the goals allowed metric to rank the top flight stoppers. ‘What is that?’ You might reasonably ask…
Expected goals after a shot are expected goals based on how likely the goalkeeper is to save the shot. When the number of their perceived targets is subtracted, we are left with the following figures. FBREF explains that positive numbers suggest better luck or an above-average ability to block shots.
Here’s how Premier League keepers have fared this season, and in this early stage they’ve started seven Premier League games.
1) Mads Hermansson (Leicester City): +5.8
Only one keeper has made more saves in a Premier League game than Hermansson’s 13 against Arsenal. It went to David Dee against the Gunners in December 2017. Fox No. 1 was unlucky Mikel Arteta’s team is now slightly better. He moved into the mid-table of the list by October/November but He made seven saves against West Ham as Leicester returned to winning ways. And then scored five more against Brighton.
Leicester have conceded the most PSxG of any Premier League team this season but Hermansson is helping Keep them out of the relegation zone. He was of little help against Newcastle United though. And now he is injured. He was badly missed against Wolves as his substitute Danny Ward was booed by his own fans.
2) Lukasz Fabianski (West Ham): +3.8
The old man proves that he still has what it takes. Was excellent against Brighton, notably saving a deflected effort from Yassin Ayari, and then made a string of saves against Southampton before going off on a stretcher with a head injury.
3) Guglielmo Vicario (Tottenham): +2.9
He struggles with set pieces but his shot blocking is exemplary. He hadn’t conceded in all his Premier League games (is that a thing?) until that batsh*t game vs Brighton. Made five saves against Crystal Palace and then none against Aston Villa. Only actually made a save v Ipswich Town but it was a belter. And was brilliant in keeping a clean sheet against Manchester City. Now missing despite the injury.
4) Dan Henderson (Crystal Palace): +2.6
a lot Encouraged to score a point against Manchester United after his ‘criminal’ decision.but when you still get two Dwight McNeil goals against Everton with a PSxG of 0.6. But he was superb in nearly keeping Nottingham Forest out, then grabbed another clean sheet against Spurs. His numbers were then boosted with a penalty save against Aston Villa. A clean sheet against Ipswich was very welcome indeed and he conceded less to Manchester City after that. He was helping a weak one. The Palace team stayed out of the relegation zone.. But then they were reduced to five by Arsenal. But overall, he is safe in the dark.
5) Andre Ona (Manchester United): +2.5
Was exposed vs Arsenal but then was an absolute ‘mare’ against Nottingham Forest, making no saves and committing a screamer for a Morgan Gibbs-White goal. Man City looked flat-footed for the goal but emerged without a real charge. For once. It wasn’t even his fault that United were beaten at home by Bournemouth. It was Partly its fault v wolves, mind.
6) Robert Sanchez (Chelsea): +2.5
He has the best save percentage in the Premier League but still gets flack from pundits.
7) Kepa (Bournemouth): +2.2
Finally kept second clean sheet of the season vs Tottenham and best was vs Ipswich Town. It was then only conceded from the penalty spot when the Cherries drew 1–1 with West Ham. Made seven saves in a 3-0 rout of Manchester United. He now has four clean sheets and the third best save percentage in the Premier League.
8) Nick Pope (Newcastle): +1.6
Made more saves than Jordan Pickford in fewer games, which feels like too many saves for the Newcastle goalkeeper. Came out of a 3-3 draw against Liverpool thanks to some fine saves, but was the best of four matches against Brentford. Now injured.
9) Fraser Forster (Tottenham): +1.5
Seen by Vicario as a huge downgrade, the number is actually quite positive. He has almost as many saves as Ederson this season but has played seven games against the Man City men’s 13. It’s not his fault Tottenham are a sh*t show.
10) Cowman Kelleher (Liverpool): +1.4
Will surely leave Liverpool next summer. Her numbers are good but not in the Alison bracket. Saved well from Erling Holland and Kevin De Bruyne to keep clean sheets against Manchester City, but was poor against Newcastle.
11) Allison (Liverpool): +1.2
Best goalkeeper on this metric two years agoand is back in the mix. But only two of five shots on target were saved by Spurs, and then there were none to be made against Leicester.
12) Ederson (Manchester City): +1.2
She is too busy without Rhodri. Except when it is not allowed to play at all.
13) Aaron Ramsdale (Southampton): +0.3
Made five saves to keep his first clean sheet of the season against Everton. Injured at the wrong time but then returned to keep a second clean sheet vs Fulham.
14) Matz Sels (Nottingham Forest): +o.3
One of the many incompetent Forest keepers last season but has a 75% save percentage and eight clean sheets this season. Only David Raya has been tested less this season thanks to Jungle’s defensive prowess.
15) Bart Verbruggen (Brighton): +0.1
Conceded eight goals and made just three saves in three Premier League games, but was much more solid in a 1-1 draw with West Ham and then a long-awaited third clean sheet of the season against Brentford.
16) Argent Meurice (Ipswich Town): -0.0
Was very poor in a 4-0 defeat by Newcastle United, taking them into the black for the first time this season. Then dropped after the Arsenal defeat in which he was much better.
17) Jordan Pickford (Everton): -0.5
After a poor start to the season, Blake came very close to playing brilliantly against Manchester City. But then he was exposed by Nottingham Forest.
18) David Raya (Arsenal): -0.8
Arsenal have the lowest PSxG against them this season so it’s hard for a goalkeeper to really shine. He’s not down here because he’s one of the worst goalkeepers in the Premier League. He made a brilliant save against Manchester United.
19) Bernd Leno (Fulham): -1.7
His save percentage has dropped from 72% to 69% this season, but he made seven saves against Chelsea as Fulham secured an unlikely victory.
20) Mark Flicken (Brentford): -2.4
Constantly One of the worst goalkeepers by that metric last seasonno keeper has made more saves this season than Flicken.
21) Sam Johnstone (Wolves): -3.0
Seven Premier League games. No clean sheets.
22) Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa): -3.4
Not the type of player you’d expect to see down here, but It took Manchester United’s rot to finally keep a clean sheet. Saved a penalty against Fulham to boost his tally but was poor against Tottenham and then Chelsea. There was literally nothing to do against Southampton. Made a ridiculous save against Nottingham Forest and was solid against Manchester City.
23) Jose Sa (Wolves): -4.1
Kept his first clean sheet of the season vs Southampton but needed to make exactly zero saves. Was barely tested by Fulham. Was tested a lot against Bournemouth and Everton and was found wanting. Returned to keep clean sheets against Leicester and Manchester United but did not make a save against Tottenham.
24) Alphonse Areola (West Ham): -4.4
Highest save percentage in the Premier League. Made eight saves against Liverpool but the Hammers still lost 5–0.
