What a difference a month can make. At the beginning of December, Newcastle United were four places and one point below Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League table.
Fast forward to the early days of 2025 and Newcastle are now fifth in the table with Tottenham in eleventh. The Magpies are now 8 points ahead of their upcoming opponent.
What went wrong for Tottenham and what went right for Newcastle?
Start with the Spurs. There is no doubt that they have been unlucky with injuries, losing number one goalkeeper Guillermo Vicario at the same time as center back Miki van de Van and Cristiano Romero.
The list of games has also brought difficult games. Chelsea and Liverpool were among Tottenham’s opponents in December. Very high flying Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest and
Yet at least some of Tottenham’s problems are self-inflicted. Even after losing the defensive core of his side, Ange Postecoglou has steadfastly refused to introduce a degree of pragmatism to his tactical approach.
Spurs play a bold and adventurous style of football. Sometimes it creates an exciting scene. In other cases, including often in the past month, it has led to hard-nosed opponents picking them with ease.
Tottenham are currently outsiders for the Champions League. A fifth-place finish would probably be enough to secure a place this term, but Postecoglou’s side are currently in the bottom half.
The mood is much brighter at St. James’s Park. Four consecutive victories have moved Newcastle up the table. Eddie Howe’s forwards have not conceded a single goal in that run of form, the latest of which came in a 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Monday night.
Newcastle have had a difficult summer and it has taken them a while to get going this season, but some of their key players are improving. Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon feature at a high level, while Sandro Tonali is developing as a deep-lying midfielder. Suddenly Newcastle look like one of the best teams in the league.
This is bad news for a Tottenham team in dire need of a player. To you, Ange.
Tottenham Hotspur will face Newcastle United in a crucial match in the Premier League this week.
Newcastle are back to their mojo and that’s bad news for Tottenham. For all their faults, Postecoglou’s side remain a major threat in the final third.
Spurs are second in goals scored, fifth in shots per game and fourth in expected goals. They recently scored three times against Liverpool, a feat that no other team has achieved in any competition this term.

The problem is on the other side of the field. In their last meeting in north London, Liverpool broke through their weak defense six times.
Newcastle are a smart team under Howe. They prefer a controlled approach to the gung-ho game plan normally employed by Tottenham.
That way, the Magpies can extend their winning streak to five games this weekend.

If you want entertainment, Tottenham Hotspur is undoubtedly the Premier League to watch.
Spurs average 3.63 goals per game, second only to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
More than half of their games (53%) have scored more than 3.5 goals, a unique record in the Premier League.
Newcastle will struggle to keep a clean sheet here, but they can outplay Postecoglou’s side on their own patch.
All things considered, it’s hard to imagine this being a cagey affair. The probability of scoring at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is very high.

It’s not often that a Newcastle United player gets a chance to score at any time away from home against Tottenham, but that’s where Isek finds himself.
There are two reasons for that. One of them is the remarkable openness of Tottenham in the defensive line. Even after losing his center backs and No. 1 goalkeeper to injury, Postecoglou didn’t provide any extra protection from his defense.
The second is Isk’s form in recent weeks. The Swedish international is on fire at the moment, scoring 12 goals in his last 13 games in all competitions.
Issac brings more than just scoring to the table. He has great feet for a tall centre-forward and is great at linking up play.
Ultimately, though, a striker is always judged by the discipline with which he puts the ball in the back of the net. Issac does it well now.
