Sentry: Hideki Matsuyama takes one-shot lead as England’s Harry Hall hits PGA Tour debut | Golf News

Hideki Matsuyama shot a second straight 65 to take a one-stroke lead halfway through the PGA Tour’s season opener in Hawaii.

The former Masters champion carded eight birdies as he reached the 36th hole with just one bogey on his card at Sentry.

His 16-under-par total at Kapalua puts him one clear of fellow major champion Colin Morikawa, who carded five consecutive birdies from 13 in a 65.

England’s Harry Hall birdied four of his last five holes en route to a 65 that took him to 13 under par in a group that also included US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley and Wyndham Clarke, who both 64 cards did.

Maverick McNeely, who equaled the lowest round of the day with a 64, and overnight leader Tom Hodge followed Morikawa with Canada’s Corey Connors on 66 and Belgium’s Thomas Detri.

“I have two jobs,” Bradley said. “One of my jobs is here, and then my other job is to be the captain and lead the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

“I’m really happy being the captain – and I love playing golf. So it’s not a difficult thing. It’s stressful, of course, but I enjoy both.”

Scotland’s Robert McIntyre shot a second-round 66 to reach 10-under par, two better than England’s Matt Fitzpatrick after a 65.

“I’m definitely satisfied with where I’m at,” Matsuyama said. “Obviously the views here are beautiful.

“I haven’t played well here in a while, so it’s good to get off to a good start here.”
