Luke Littler was on cloud nine at Ally Pally, becoming the youngest world champion in darts.
17 years old Michael van Gerwen hammered three-time champion 7-3 to round off a memorable year that ended with darts’ biggest prize.
Not only that, but he also took home £500,000, a sum that probably didn’t sink in until it was announced to the thousands of contestants and millions watching at home.
smallerWorld No. 164 at the start of 2024, he puffed his cheeks as he read of his achievements, which added to the £1 million prize money accumulated over the past 12 months.
Littler was in tears as he reached the last 16 doubles, erasing the heartache of 2024 when he was beaten by him. Luke Humphries in the final
He won ten titles in 2024, including the Premier League and the Grand Slam of Darts, but it was the Syd Waddell Trophy that he coveted.
He said he learned a lot from that loss and then revealed that he watched the game again.
“No one knows this, but I watched the whole game against Luke (Humphreys) earlier today and I saw what I saw,” he said afterward.
“At 2-0 down I started to get nervous but I told myself ‘just take it easy’.
“I was throwing for the match, but to finish it was special.”
Fans are wondering if this is the start of a period of dominance for Littler, with claims that he could one day surpass Phil Taylor’s record of 16 world championships.
He certainly showed that he is the real deal in North London.
Van Gerwen has given Littler more trouble than anyone else on the 2024 Tour, but the teenager has had the better of the stages when it matters most.
He averaged 102.73, threw 12 180s and hit 56 percent of his doubles.
A new legion of fans fell in love with Darts in 2024 after he reached the final on television at the age of 16 to a record 3.71 million viewers.
There will almost certainly be more – even if the game is over in less than 30 minutes as he races to a 4-0 lead and ensures Van Gerwen’s wait for a title continues.
“Fair play to him,” Van Groen said in his post-match interview.
“Every chance he got, every moment he had to hurt me, he did. I sometimes say that every 17 years a star is born and he is one of them.”
