Jamie Carragher has ‘teasing you’ with his prediction that Arsenal will win the Champions League, scoffed Roy Keane.
The legend of Manchester United believes that Carragher wants to increase the pressure on the Gunners, who have had a sensational start to the season in all competitions.
In the last episode of Stick to Football, Keane, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Ian Wright and Jill Scott debated about the predictions, and Keane also mocked Scott for following his advice.
‘Jamie said last night that Arsenal is the favorite for the Champions League. Well, he put them as favourites,’ the former England star said.
Keane then intervened, suggesting Carragher’s ulterior motive: ‘Jamie plays like that, doesn’t he? He puts them as favorites to take the pressure off Liverpool a little, there’s a bit of that.’
‘But we all sit here and say, “Who’s going to win the league?” And we’re all going to say Arsenal now, and that’s putting pressure on them.’
Roy Keane says that Jamie Carragher has been ‘tomando el pelo’ with his prediction about Arsenal
Jill Scott said that Carragher predicted that Arsenal would win the Champions League this season
‘I’m still betting on Chelsea,’ Scott replied.
Keane couldn’t believe his ears and said: ‘Jill, seriously, do you drink alcohol in the morning? How do you think Chelsea can win the league?
‘Against Nottingham Forest they wasted ten chances playing from the back. Do you think they are better than Arsenal?’
Scott replied: ‘You change your mind all the time.’
But Keane reminded him of his prediction before the start of the season, adding: ‘When I changed my mind, who did I say at the beginning of the season for the title? I said Arsenal’.
Arsenal is the leader of the Premier League, with three points of advantage over Manchester City and four over the champion, Liverpool.
The Gunners are still solid, conceding only three goals in all competitions and scoring 4-0 against Atlético de Madrid on Tuesday to extend their reputation as one of the most dominant teams in Europe.
Wright, a legend of Arsenal, said: ‘You have to look at Arsenal’s progression to where they are now. “Chelsea is still trying to get to that point and that’s what it’s like to challenge a rival.”
Scholes is still not vincent: ‘I don’t think we’ve seen a great team this year. ‘Arsenal is a very good team, but I haven’t seen a single action in which I thought they were going to win the league this year, save maybe against Newcastle away from home.’
Arsenal beat Atlético de Madrid on Tuesday night and are unbeaten in Europe.
Wright then made the comparison between the last season, in which Arsenal fell short.
‘Newcastle, West Ham and Fulham, from those that we got a point last year. This is what made me feel that they are good now, because we got nine points from them this season. The mentality has changed, they know what has to happen.’
‘Even the result in Newcastle. They continue forward and know that they are solid enough in defense to go all out. Last season, when Liverpool got lost and we needed to apply pressure, it wasn’t like that.’
Next, Neville gave his opinion and suggested that, even now, it would be a big surprise that Arsenal would not win the title.
“They have played against United, Manchester City and Liverpool.” They have already played against almost everyone and they are where they are. It’s bad to say this because it’s ridiculous, and we’ve all been in title races. If they don’t win it from here… we all have predicted that Arsenal will win the league well, but we know that it can go badly.
‘If they don’t win it from where they are, and the position of confidence they are in now… A lot of things can change, but they are in a good place. It seems that the game against Newcastle turned the tables.
‘It’s not about putting pressure on them, but about making them think: “This is us. This year, we have to win.” When you can bring in Lewis-Skelly for Califiori and Ben White, and Mosquera coming in without any loss, this is scary.’
Keane predicted that Arsenal would win the Premier League and mocked Scott for his prediction about Chelsea.
Keane was cautious about how quickly the dynamic can change.
‘We have to be careful,’ warned the Irishman.
‘We have a responsibility to say things. Two or three weeks ago, we already saw what happened to Liverpool. If Arsenal had some injuries, things could change very quickly.’
He also dared to suggest that in the defeat of Forest before Chelsea at the end of the week, after which Ange Postecoglou lost his position, the players might not want to score goals.
‘You look at the first half of the game against Forest and the chances I had when Ange was sacked. Do they really want to score? Do you want to keep him in the post?
‘I’m talking about good players who don’t even hit the goal. Then a manager loses his job and you look at these Forest players, like: “Oh, well, another manager has gone. A new one is coming.” Idiots’.
