Rooney names three Lions stars who won’t make Tuchel’s World Cup squad after Serbia win

Jack Grealish is “booking his holiday as well as May”, according to Wayne Rooney as England boss Thomas Tuchel cuts his World Cup selection short.

The Three Lions defeated Serbia 2-0 on Thursday evening with the England Picking up three more points after already qualifying for the World Cup from their group.

Tuchel will already have an idea of what his squad will look like when the Three Lions travel to North America next year but there are still some players who weigh in against the former Chelsea boss.

One of those will not be Everton winger Grealish – who is currently on loan at Everton from Manchester City – according to Rooney, as he believes Grealish would have been called up this time if he had been considered.

The former England captain said on the Wayne Rooney Show: “Jack Grealish might as well book his holiday for the summer because he’s not coming into the squad.

“You think Andy Gordon withdraws and he still doesn’t get called into it, so I think Thomas Tuchel is pretty much established.”

Rooney was also surprised Tuchel decided to call Harry Kane as the striker would have benefited from some rest ahead of a busy schedule leading up to the World Cup.

The UTD and England legend added: “I think the international break was the perfect opportunity to just say to Harry Kane, ‘Go and have a week off’. He doesn’t need to be there.

“He wanted to be there but you need to take that option away from him and then it’s an opportunity for Thomas Tuchel to look at the players and see what they can do.”

Tuchel tested Manchester City attacker Phil Foden at the top of the pitch when Kane departed against Serbia and the England boss believes he can comfortably play as a number nine.

The England head coach said of Foden: “If Phil stays in his shape and form, I have no problem (playing him as a No.9). I have a few other options in mind that I don’t want to talk about in public.

“Don’t forget we have Ollie Watkins and (Danny) Welbeck, (who are probably) more 9s, Harry has different options as well.

“We have a lot of options but it will probably be about who is in form, what we have in the squad and how we distribute the minutes, who we play and what we expect from the match.”

When asked if Foden could challenge Kane for his shirt, Tuchel added: “Well, it’s a big ask to challenge Harry at the moment – he’s in the form of his life. Out of this world, the work rate, the quality and the finishing ratio is just out of control.

“But even here, maybe (Phil) could be a team-mate with Harry and share some minutes in decisive matches.”
