Referee Huw Ware made instant history in the final of the PDC World Darts Championship.
Luke Littler and Michael Van Gerwen with a historical and mouth-watering story PDC World Championship Final At Alexandra Palace, with ‘The Nuke’ looking to steal his rival’s record to become the sport’s youngest world champion.
Millions of people all over the world were in awe as two of the best in the tungsten industry created a magical affair.
But it was the referee who immediately drew positive attention as he took to the stage to announce the match.
And his name was immediately etched in the history books as he became the first openly gay referee to call the final of the sport’s showpiece match.
He posted a statement on his blog that he was happy with the news.
It read: “Honestly, tomorrow will be the greatest day of my life.
I have been in the PDC for eight years now and it will be one of the greatest honors of my life to take charge of the second half and invite the champion.
“If I have anything to say about this, it’s that if there are gay boys or girls out there who are worried that their sexuality could close the door to the world they want to be in, but no longer feel they can be in them, then it is not so.
“These worlds, like the world of sports, are open to all gays and lesbians, and even if the journey is tough at times, days like tomorrow are worth it.
No matter who you are, you can make it in any world you want, and most importantly, you can belong.
Some truly fantastic judges have graced the Ally Pally stage, including legend Ross Berry who retired after last year’s final.
Ware would take control in the late stages and Kirk Bivins would control the game from the start.
Ware will call an incredible final that will surely go down in history for a number of reasons.
Littler himself is looking for a permanent place in the history books, and “The Nuke” is looking to capitalize on multiple records.
He can get the art ball first before throwing the dart, unless Van Groen corrects his incredible stats.
But he could also surpass the Dutch legend by becoming the sport’s youngest champion at the age of 17.
“He (Littler) still has years (to break the record),” Van Gerwen said of his chances.
“With his ability, it would surprise me if he doesn’t do it.
I really don’t care; I don’t look at statistics. The same people talking to me about breaking some of Phil Taylor’s records – I don’t care.
“It’s all about what you do now, and whoever is in your way. You have to face it and beat it.”
