Real Madrid have reportedly ‘promised’ Xabi Alonso to try and sign Florian Wertz from Liverpool, but will only go as far as trying to land the midfielder.
Real and Liverpool There were two of the biggest clubs trying to sign him Wirtz The Spanish club bowed out of the race in the summer, with the Reds paying a whopping $116 million for him.
Since then, reports have continued to suggest that the German has not left Real’s radar.
That he isn’t doing too well at Liverpool could give them hope of getting Wirtz on the cheap. In fact, after 16 games, he has three assists and no goals.
After hitting double figures for both in their last season with Bayer Leverkusen, more was expected.
According to And Central defenseWirtz is one of former Leverkusen boss Alonso’s top targets, and although the club consider the move to be ‘practically impossible’, they have ‘promised’ Alonso to try to get him.
They will only do so if Wirtz becomes available for a reasonable fee. Not willing to exceed $70-75 million (£61.9-66.3m) for the original German.
He knows a move for that price seems ‘unrealistic’ knowing that Liverpool will be looking for a ‘generous offer’ considering what they paid, but this is the response to Alonso.

Boss is also said to be exploring other options as he seems resigned to a fate that won’t involve Wertz.
It is unlikely that Liverpool will cut ties with Wirtz, as he has shown glimpses of the player at Leverkusen.
A number of pundits have suggested that he is going to be good, with David Bentley the latest, as he has likened the Liverpool man to Luka Modric.
He said: “He’s an incredible player, so the talent, the fans and the pundits have to live with him. Yes, he is exactly that (as is Modric).
“When Modric walked through the door, the way he received the ball, he scanned, he knew what he was doing. He was an incredibly technically gifted player, and both could set the tone and tempo of a football match, so you have to be with him.”
If a sale does happen, it seems unlikely that it will happen in either of the next two transfer windows.
