Danny Rohl certainly knew what was going on at Rangers. If he doesn’t, Thursday’s defeat to Bern will be a rude awakening.

Former manager Steven Gerrard was the club’s first choice to replace him Martinbut he pulled out after emerging as the frontrunner.

New manager, same result for Rangers

There wasn’t much sympathy for Russell Martin during his disastrous spell in charge, and Rangers fans won’t get to Rohl much either. But at some point, you have to look at the playing squad and realize it’s nowhere near as good.

And that’s with what’s going on above the manager, with recruitment under the club’s new ownership group no less than shambles.

Hopes were high when a 49ers Enterprises-led consortium acquired a majority stake in Rangers in May, but less than five months on, the mood at Ibrox may not be dampening.

Rohl certainly knew what he was getting into, yet his unveiling must have taken him by surprise, as he became a sideshow while chief executive Patrick Stewart, owner Andrew Cianagh, and sporting director Kevin Thielwell fell into the firing line.

In particular, Theilwell and Stewart have been absolutely blasted for the ongoing shambles, with the former admitting he underestimated the size of the club – an incredibly naive thing to say and do.

It is nothing short of a circus. Now that Theilwell, Stewart and Cyanagh have tried to explain to the media Rangers’ terrible start to the season and Martin’s disastrous spell, it also requires a police escort from the stadium in Falkirk. It’s time for Rohl to become the face of a botched operation and try to convey that everything is going wrong.

Thursday’s result and performance was no better than that of Drass Rangers under Martin. It was simply a case of the new man in the dugout, the same mess on the pitch.

Rangers Football Club: Scotland’s answer to Manchester United

There are some striking similarities between Rangers and another under-performing giant, Manchester United.

No matter who the manager is, or how much money is spent, no club gets it right.

Players have been signed with high expectations and massively spoiled. Players have been signed for staggering fees and have been spoiled too. The so-called elite managers have ultimately failed. And it all adds up to a toxic environment among supporters.

There is no clear fix as both clubs continue to fall short of their lofty expectations.

As has often been the question at Man United, it is now the same for Rangers: where do they go from here? What can Rohl do to get this underperforming squad performing at the desired level? Confidence will go a long way, but it can only come from getting results.

What’s next for the Rangers?

Ruhl will be hoping for his first win as Rangers boss – and only the club’s second in the league this season – when they host Kilmarnock on Sunday.

After that, it’s a quick turnaround with a trip to Hibernian three days later, before the small affair of the Old Firm derby at Celtic Park on November 2.

Celtic are undefeated right now, but Rangers’ problems run deeper than that. And with Roma coming to Ibrox just four days after the derby, there is no easy way to change the result.

Long story short: it doesn’t look good.
