Wayne Rooney lost Plymouth again and they are now without a win in 10 games as pressure continues to mount on the former Manchester United star.
In what was a relegation six-pointer, Argyle could have gone level on points with their opponents if Oxford had won the game, but they went down 2-0 as the team and Rooney were once again seduced .
The result leaves Plymouth at the bottom of the league and staring down at League One in the face – four points off safety and having won just four of 23 league games so far.
Pressure continues to be piled on the 39-year-old, who is believed to be earning around £500,000-a-week with Argyle in the fourth different club he has managed since retiring.
The result came on the back of a 2-1 defeat by Swansea on Boxing Day, with Plymouth taking two, three, four and three in their previous four games.
The former England captain has tried a number of methods on and off the field in terms of the way he addressed his team in the media, but there have been no signs of any imminent change at the club.
And although Rooney has been supported by his family throughout his managerial career so far, with his wife Coleen opening up about his struggles during her time on ITV’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!, they were not present in Oxford.
Coleen, 38, was instead in the crowd with three of her four children as Everton took on Nottingham Forest at Goodison Park at the same time.
Kai, 15, Kit, eight, Cass, six, sat with Coleen in the stands as all the sport unfolded during the post-Christmas game.
She wrapped up warmly in a padded black jacket and swept her dark hair back into a smooth updo.
Rumors continue to swirl that Wayne’s job is hanging in the balance, he has not thought about a possible sacking from Plymouth and insists he is focused on improving the squad in January.
Meanwhile, he has insisted he can lift his side off the foot of the league table.
Speaking after the 3-3 draw with Middlesbrough earlier this month, he said: ‘We’re bottom of the league but if we continue to perform like we’ve been doing over the last three games I’m sure the we’ll be winning games soon,’ said Rooney.
‘I don’t have a problem with that because it’s a strange league but it’s not where we want to be.’
