Gary Neville has admitted he and many others felt Manchester United had “no chance” against Liverpool but were proved wrong “within a minute”.

He said The Gary Neville Podcast: “And not just me, but when I saw the team, I thought, we don’t have a chance.

“And I had three or four texts from United fans, who are in midfield, oh my God, Casemiro and Bruno (Fernandez), (Harry) Maguire and (Matthews) de Leggett at the back.

“You know, Liverpool’s pace, honestly, the energy in Liverpool’s midfield and legs.

“And Casemiro played two games in Brazil’s international break and obviously traveled from Asia, you’re thinking, how can that be okay? But that was before the match.

“I have to say, within a minute, it was gone because it was a brilliant moment for United, a really good play from Emad (Dyalo), sliding it in to (Brian) Mbemo. And that got them off on the right foot.”

A look at the game’s statistics shows that there was indeed cause for caution for Neville and others.

Liverpool had more shots, more on target and more of the ball. However, United sat back and played the ball late to get themselves out of trouble and transition from defense to attack.

As a result, the Reds struggled to break them down and although they should have scored a second when Gakpo inevitably glanced a free header wide of an open net, never managed to find the net again.
