Former Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has admitted that he realized he needed to get out of the club in the summer amid his move to Fenerbahce.
The Brazilian spent eight years in Manchester with Pep Guardiola’s side, winning six Premier League titles and the Champions League during an illustrious period for the club.
In the summer, though, his stay came to an end, and he moved to Turkey for £12 million, with Gianluigi Donnarumma replacing him between the sticks at the Etihad.
It was a move that couldn’t come soon enough for Ederson, who has become the undisputed No. 1 in Turkey and is now back in the fold with Brazil.
“All cycles come to an end, players come and go, but the club always remains,” he said while on international duty. ‘I had eight wonderful years wearing the City shirt and won 18 titles, but I needed this change and a change of scenery.’
He added: ‘Sometimes it’s really good to have new challenges in your life, in your career. It brings new energy, many positive things, and something new within you.
Manchester City legend Ederson has revealed that he ‘needed’ to leave the club in the summer
He revealed he had tried to depart the year before and blamed his dip in form last season on the fact he could not leave
‘With this change, I’m breathing football again and feeling the atmosphere of the games in Turkey, which is crazy. I’m very happy with this challenge; the club has not won a national title for a long time. I hope I can help bring back that glory and take the club to the top.’
He also revealed that he had tried to leave City before the summer, and blamed his dip in form last season on not being ‘happy’ at the club.
City finished third in the Premier League last year, 13 points behind winners Liverpool, in what was ultimately a transition year for a side that had been Treble winners just two years before.
Now, though, Ederson is of the opinion that he is back to his best – and his move is to thank for that.
‘In a previous season I had already tried to leave, but it didn’t work out,’ he said. I think that influenced my performance a bit during the season.
I had five injuries and was not at my highest possible level. It was a decision I had already made with my family to talk to the club about leaving if we agreed.
I needed this change. There’s no point in being at a giant, winning club if you’re not happy. That would continue to affect me in the same way.’
