Salah has been on the perimeter for most of Liverpool’s games this season and missed a number of chances in Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United.

Now, Rooney believes Salah could leave Liverpool as early as January.

“I think Salah has played a lot of games over the last few years, and he’s been the main man, and he’s taken that pressure,” Rooney said on his BBC podcast.

“And you’d probably be one of the top five great Premier League players in my opinion. I think it might have caught on a bit with him.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he leaves the club in January, or next summer.

“But I love watching him, he’s such a fantastic player, but I think maybe it’s just caught on, because it does.”

He added: “Sometimes you don’t want to admit it but the next thing you know, you’re gone.”

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, meanwhile, has explained why he believes Salah needs to be moved out of the firing line as he is no longer one of the “first names on the team sheet”.

“I don’t think Mohamed Salah is like a Virgil van Dijk where it’s ‘the first name on the team sheet,'” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“Liverpool have got two away games, one against Frankfurt in the Champions League, and then they go to Brentford.

“I don’t think Mo Salah should start both of those games. He should always start at Anfield because Liverpool are going to be up top, around the box and on the scoresheet more often.

“But I think with games and also helping your right-back, I don’t think he should start every game, certainly given that form away from home.”
