Former Sky Sports favorite Jim White celebrates 14 years sober after listening to Graeme Souness’ advice

Popular football presenter Jim White has celebrated being 14 years sober in an emotional post on social media.

The former Sky Sports News host, who now works as a radio presenter on talkSPORT, has previously opened up on his struggles with controlling his drinking habits.

But now, the Glaswegian has cheerfully taken to social media to reveal that he is 14 years sober — and encouraged others to consider doing the same.

Hi everyone! I’m exactly 14 years sober today and want to extend my congratulations to those achieving something similar,’ White posted to X on Tuesday.

‘To those on the same path, love and strength. To those trying to get there, I’m waiting to welcome you.’

White, 68, accompanied the post with a picture of him smiling and looking well in the talkSPORT studio.

It was during his time at Sky Sports that White grappled with alcohol the most, as the Scot explained on a podcast appearance earlier this year.

White explained how his close friend Graeme Souness once told him to quit drinking, although it took a while for him to heed the Liverpool legend’s advice.

‘It was quite simply, I’d enjoy a drink too much,’ he disclosed on the Spooning with Mark Wogan podcast.

‘As you know, everything I used to do when I worked in television, certainly at Sky, was live. Everything I do on the radio today is live.

‘Recovering became a bit of an onerous task. I was spending too much time in a bar talking with people and giving them too much of my own time, and thinking I was more important than I actually was, and not really getting a grip on where I was at that particular time in my life.

‘So I decided I’m drinking too much, it was hinted to me, “Maybe you want to cut down, maybe better than that, you want to quit”.

‘(Graeme) Souness said to me years ago when he was managing Benfica, “One thing I’ve been hearing about you is that you’re maybe drinking too much Jim.” That was about six or seven years before I stopped, and I was like, “Really, Graeme, thanks for that”, and went right over my head and carried on.

‘But I carried on, and it was a stupid thing to do, and it became apparent. I wasn’t recovering from a hangover as well as I should have been, I was occasionally looking a bit rough on TV.

‘I wasn’t performing as well as I should and I was letting the viewers down. I was letting people close to me down, family members down but letting myself down.’

White joined Sky Sports in 1998 and was best known for his impressive round-the-clock coverage of transfer deadline day twice a year. He left the network in 2021.
