Former Chelsea star makes bizarre claim about Man United after a year under Ruben Amorim – and sends warning to Red Devils’ boss

Former Chelsea star Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has insisted Manchester United are not improving under Ruben Amorim, despite the Red Devils recent upturn in results.

Amorim was officially appointed as Man United boss on November 1 last year, with his first game in charge ending in a 1-1 draw with Ipswich 10 days later.

The Portuguese boss endured a difficult start to life at the club, leading to him issuing an apology to fans after overseeing a 15th place finish, their worst performance in the Premier League era.

Amorim’s side were also beaten in the Europa League final by Tottenham, which saw the club miss out on Champions League qualification, with the Red Devils not involved in European competition this season.

Man United suffered a shock Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby in August to raise further questions about Amorim’s leadership, but Premier League results have improved in recent weeks.

Amorim has overseen a five-match unbeaten run heading into the international break, which has included a 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield and a dramatic late draw against Tottenham on Saturday.

The run has left Man United seventh in a congested Premier League table, just two points shy of third-placed Chelsea.

Speaking on Sky Sports, former Chelsea striker Hasselbaink dismissed suggestions that Man United have improved under Amorim’s management.

Hasselbaink, who has managed Burton Albion, Northampton Town and QPR, maintained that Amorim still has ‘a lot of work to do’ to make his side successful.

‘I don’t think they have improved, I’m sorry,’ Hasselbaink said.

‘Where, where have they improved?

They have not scored more goals, they have not had less goals against, they have not won any trophies.

Yes, they have been in a final in Europe but lost against a poor side, Tottenham were a poor side last year.

‘He has got a lot of work to do, a lot of work.

‘I don’t think they are creative enough, not like they used to be.’

Man United results in the Premier League have improved under Amorim, with the coach having had a worrying return of seven wins, six draws and 14 defeats in 27 top flight matches last season.

Amorim’s side, by contrast, have won five, drawn three and lost three so far this season.

Two of the defeats have come against Arsenal and Man City – the current top two in the Premier League – while victories over Chelsea and Liverpool have been notable scalps.

Amorim himself had sought to play down excitement over Man United’s unbeaten run, with the 40-year-old insisting his side still have problems to resolve following their 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Saturday.

‘We have a lot of problems, we are just in the beginning,’ Amorim said post-match.

I know that sometimes the results show people that we are improving.

‘We are improving but we have a lot to do.’
