Ferdinand claims Amorim is ‘playing Russian roulette’ with his job at Old Trafford

Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand insists Ruben Amorim is “playing Russian roulette with his job” after refusing to change his tactics.

The Red Devils made a poor start to the new season, with just two wins from their first six games, and there were concerns Man utd Heading for a similar finish last campaign, where they finished 15th in the Premier League.

However, victories against Sunderland and Liverpool saw them win back-to-back matches for the first time since Amorim joined, while another win against Brighton on Saturday made it three in a row.

Main UTD is now up to six inches Premier League Table With a bit of a feel-good factor around Old Trafford after months of discomfort.

Amorim stubbornly refused to deviate from his preferred formation and tactics earlier in the season and it seems to be paying off.

However, Ferdinand believes Amorim is “playing Russian roulette with his job” by being so specific about the way he wants his team to play.

Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel: “I admire him to a certain extent. But, like I said, I think he’s playing Russian roulette with his job. I don’t think he’s changed much, he just tweeted.

“A lot of fans were asking. Just tweak what you have. Maybe not so much on the front foot, maybe a little bit more conservative when we haven’t got the ball.

“You don’t press, press, press for 90 minutes, unless you’re an absolute beast of a team. PSG do that. This manager can’t do that with this squad.

“It’s just sometimes how the cookie falls. We can look back in six months and, say Man United in the Champions League or something like that, he’ll probably sit there with confidence and go, ‘Well, if I change, I’ll probably be out of a job because I’m doing things that are alien to me’.”

Gary Neville insists he was “a bit worried” that Amorim had lost the players’ faith a few weeks ago but now believes the man has survived a “reckoning” month at Old Trafford for the UTD head coach.

Neville said Sky Sports: “A couple of weeks ago I was a bit worried that the players didn’t believe in Ruben Amorim’s system. Maybe there was an element of not winning matches and starting to question that which we all – myself included – added to.

“But one thing that’s absolutely not in doubt is when you talk to people around the club they really like him as a person, and that counts for a lot. Because I think there’s no doubt about it – he hasn’t lost the dressing room in terms of spirit and energy and how they feel with him.

“I think they want to play for it, they’re desperate to win and I think you’ve seen it come together in the last week. I mean, to win at Anfield in any season is special, but to win at Ruben Amorim at Anfield when it’s so unexpected I’ve given them such a big lift.

“We’ll be looking forward to the game against Nottingham Forest next week, after Tottenham’s week – there’s still a big job in the next month. But I think it’s a month to reckon with. If it had started badly against Liverpool last week it could have been very different, it feels like they have a bit of a good feel and spirit.”
