De Leggt reveals two Liverpool weak links as Red Devils ‘knew’ Carragher had to target them amid concerns

Manchester United centre-back Matthijs de Ligt has revealed he targeted two Liverpool stars during Sunday’s 2-1 win at Anfield.

Red devils Sunday afternoon marked their most important win to date under head coach Ruben Amorim.

After defeating Sunderland before the international break, Man Utd followed that up with a 2-1 victory over Premier League holders Liverpool at Anfield. This is the first time they have won back-to-back league games Amorim.

United made the best start to the game when Brian Mbemo broke the deadlock inside two minutes before Harry Maguire headed home a late winner after Cody Gakpo equalised.

As a result, Mans left in the Premier League table just two points behind Liverpool As Arne Slott’s side are in crisis after four straight losses in all competitions.

Liverpool have issues throughout as most of their key players are struggling, one of the biggest issues being at fullback.

Milos Kirkes and Conor Bradley started against Man Utd and match after match, De Ligt revealed they were targeted by the Red Devils.

“We knew Liverpool had a weakness. And that’s their full back,” De Ligt revealed.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, meanwhile, has revealed his concerns with his full-back as Slott’s side are “not coping very well” with “the style of the Premier League at the moment”.

“If you look at Liverpool’s signings, the full-backs are very small so there’s no real physical presence,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“In terms of set-pieces, is the team big enough? They don’t seem to be coping very well with set-pieces and are struggling with the Premier League style at the moment.

“I don’t think it’s one obvious problem, it’s a lot of things. Some of their best players from last season are not at the same level and it’s not happening enough for Liverpool now.

“They felt invincible last season. Now as soon as someone beats them, they’ve lost four in a row. It’s like Manchester City last season: you can’t believe they’re losing. Now it’s the same with Liverpool.

“They’ve got to get out of it quickly but we won’t see the best of Liverpool until the second half of the season. Liverpool don’t want to do the dirty work sometimes.

“Liverpool are a much better team than Manchester United so if Manchester United were to come to Anfield and win it had to be like that, get a bit of luck with a late goal.

“Liverpool are not in the race defensively at all. Until they fix that, they can’t win the league.”
