There were many questions from the media pack for Tellwell.

Much has been made of the appointment of his son Robbie as head of recruitment, with fans not convinced he is qualified for the role.

However, he defended and explained the decision to bring Thelwell Jnr to IBROX.

“It’s always been uncomfortable aurally and optically that I think we’ve all agreed to take this step to teach Robbie that he can be seen in a certain way,” Thelwell said.

“The reality of the situation is that we want to bring the best talent here to the rangers.

“The way I look at Robbie’s career and situation is that he doesn’t need my help in football anymore.

“He worked at Asple Villa as a senior Scout, he then moved to Norwich City as head of Scouting and was then promoted to Play Ats manager at Playsle.

“Before we recruited him, two Premier League clubs wanted to take him. What we did right at the start of the process was Patrick, Andrew and Vice-Chairman) who were part of this situation.

“I am very transparent and I think that Robbie has probably gone through a more rigorous process than anyone who works at this football club.

“What I know is that he will act 25/8 to be successful at this football club and I expect him to prove that he is an excellent employee for rangers.”

Thelwell also defended the signing of striker Youssef Chemiti, who arrived at Rangers for a reported initial fee of £8m, failing to score in 24 appearances for Everton.

It was Thelwell who brought the Portuguese international to Merseyside from Sporting – again for big money in a £15m deal.

He was asked if he stood by his mini million pound signing, having scored in seven outings for the club.

“Yes, a lot,” Thellwell said. “I think Youssef Chemiti is a player with a lot of potential.

“I have never doubted it in any way, shape or form. Again, I think that Danny will help to get the best out of youtsef.

“Very early days for him, he is a young talent and of course with young talents sometimes they take a little time.

“But I’m sure in the course of his career here he will prove that he is a very good, very good player.”
