England’s World Cup Dilemma – Hard opposition or easy friends?

Before the start of the league of nations, the England team often arranges matches against countries from all over the world. But friendlies are now relatively rare – England have played just 14 since the 2018 World Cup, compared to 37 in the seven years before.

The England Women’s team enjoys a great deal of freedom.

Before the 2023 tournament they played nine matches against opponents of different strengths, in addition to the finalsissima against Brazil.

They reached the semi-finals in 2019 and the final in 2023.

So will the men watching organize games against top nations, or against nations that play in a similar style to their World Cup opponents?

I mean, you do both. Ahead of the 2018 World Cup, England played the Netherlands and Italy (who failed to qualify) in March before taking on Group For Group Bather Time games in Tunisia and Panama.

But England need to weigh up both types of preparation, and also consider possible knock-on opponents.

They have not faced a South American team since a 1-0 loss to Brazil in March 2024.

And they have not played a team from Asia (discounting a friendly against Australia in October 2023) or clacaceo since the matches against Iran and USA in the 2022 World Cup.

Draw will be the guide, but Uruguay (ranked 15th) will present the opportunity to play a team from South America, and will be their strong opponents in two years. Japan, which is in its 19th year, is the leading country in Asia.

However, you can’t help but wonder if England may be missing a genuine top-level test ahead of the World Cup.
