Kobbie Mainoo: Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim cannot guarantee the midfielder’s future

Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim says he wants Kobbie Mainoo to stay at the club – but there is no guarantee it will happen.

The England midfielder, 19, was linked with Chelsea earlier this week amid the ongoing stalling of his proposed contract extension.

United officials say they are concentrating on securing the futures of Harry Maguire and Amad Diallo, who have been free to talk to clubs abroad from January 1.

The pair have now agreed to extensions but Mainoo remains on his current contract, which has two and a half years left to run.

Sources close to the teenager feel they are in a strong position to agree a hefty raise given his enhanced status as an international and regular member of United’s starting line-up. line-up under Amorim and, previously, Erik ten Hag.

However, the issue is complicated by what United acknowledge is a ‘tight’ situation in terms of profitability and sustainability and the knowledge that the sale of homegrown players creates greater flexibility in signing players under Premier League financial rules, which the Old Trafford outfit have committed to.

“Our idea has always been to keep the best players and the players we’ve built for this club,” Amorim said ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup trip to Arsenal.

“But we know the club’s position at the moment. We’ll see.”
