Out of the 20 clubs relegated from league two from 2015, eight have since returned to promotion to the fourth tier – Barnet, Chestery, Chestery, Chelton Orient.
The clubs that pay a heavy price are Dagenham & Redbridge, which was transferred to the city of the National League in the last season of the National League, although the club was dissolved by the financial issues that started in the second season.
The Silkmen have since made their way back to North Candi North after re-establishing Phoenix Club Macclesfield FC.
“The counter-argument for clubs coming from the EFL is that the National League is a safety net,” Thompson said.
“If you look at some of the clubs that have been transferred over the years, they are in real trouble.
“But the National League is there, it’s a good Professional League and clubs have been able to regroup and bounce back up.
“So the additional promotion area will actually, I believe, benefit the clubs because it will be easier for them to explode.”
Thompson also fears that continuing to make it “more difficult” to get promoted to League Two will force the owners of National League clubs to walk away.
“That could be detrimental to football,” he said.
