EFL Trophy: David McGldrick Hits Hat-Trick as Barnley, Stevenage and Barnet Win


Veteran Striker David McGldrick scored a hat-trick for Barnley as they beat Manchester United U21s 5-2 in the Vertu Trophy, while Stevenage Putsal Palace U21s by the same score.

Barnet, meanwhile, beat Cambridge United 3-2 to go top of Southern Group H in the other game of the night.

Alex Revll’s The Stevenage side have won all three of their EFL Trophy matches this season and are second in the league to a man, one point behind leaders Cardiff City with a game in hand.

Lewis Olford double sets up Phoenix Patterson before scoring in the fifth of the game at Lamex Stadium.

Harry Lee’s own goal gave the hosts the lead with Jovan Malcolm doubling the lead on 24 minutes.

George King and Kaden Rodney answered for Palace, with Patterson scoring on either side before Orford rounded off the score in added time.

McGldrick, 37, scored his first Barnsley goals since August, with Neil Farrugiia and Jon Russell also on target for the Oakwell tunes.

Jack Fletcher provided the header but was shown a red card after the hour, with Chido Obi scoring the visitors’ other goal.

Barnet fought back from 2-1 down to beat Cambridge.

Lee Ndlovu put the Bees in front with an Oliver Hawkins tear and a strike from Elias Kachunga to put the U’s in front.

Britt Assombalonga leveled the score on his barnet debut, with Emmanuel Osadeebe netting in the 90th minute to win the game at Dean Brennan.
