These were turbulent times for West Ham on the pitch too.
There were many empty seats at the London Stadium on Monday as some fans staged a boycott, distancing themselves from the protest against the club’s run.
While this is the first boycott, supporters have previously called for Chairman David Sullivan and Vice-Chairl Karren Brady, who has been at West Ham since 2010, to step down.
Thousands of fans demonstrated before the defeat last month by the crystal palace and in response the club issued a long statement,, outside Saying that they continue “to listen to fan feedback”, make “significant investments in football operations” and “continue to do everything to improve the customer experience”.
Payne was among the fans who walked away from the game for what he said was the first and last time he would do so.
“There is a boycott but the fans are not the problem, we are the solution waiting to be heard,” he said.
“This is a deliberate boy who sends a message to the owners that something needs to change.”
Payne said the fan prots only targeted the club’s owners, rather than the manager or player.
But Nuno’s decision to start with the changed full-backs against Bruntford has raised eyebrows.
“It’s not fair to Nuno and it’s not fair to the players either,” Payne added.
“Nuno is a nice bloke, but I think he got his options a little skew-whff at night by playing everywhere – as if he didn’t suffer at all.”
