Arsenal suffered an early scare on New Year’s Day as Brian Mbomo netted Brentford 1-0 in their first Premier League game of 2025.
Most importantly, however, they did not panic after their opponents’ first blood. Gabriel Jesus equalized with a close-range header before second-half strikes from Mikel Merino and Gabriel Martinelli put the game away from the Bees.
It was vital that Arsenal prevailed at the Gtech Community Stadium. If it wasn’t for them, Liverpool would be stronger favorites to win the title. As it is, Arsenal remain in contention for now.
Six points separate the Gunners from the top of the table, although they have played a game more than leaders Liverpool. Arsenal will have to pray that the Reds slip up while ensuring they stay consistent themselves. This is a tall order.
Indeed, Mikel Arteta’s side have given themselves a lot to do. They are still cursing themselves for dropping points against the likes of Brighton & Hove Albion (first match in August), Bournemouth and Everton.
However, there is no point in focusing on those results. Even this excellent Liverpool side will struggle to maintain their relentless pace at the moment, so Arsenal should not give up with half of the campaign remaining. There is still a long way to go until 2024/25.
There were many positive signs against Brentford. Two of Arsenal’s three goals were scored from open play and Merino’s goal was a free kick. The Gunners continue to be the most prolific team in the dead ball category.
Even with Bokaio Saka injured, Arsenal created plenty of chances and, with the exception of Mbomo’s early goal, kept Brentford at bay.
It was a much needed away win too and Arsenal need another win this weekend. The Gunners struggled on the road a few months ago, picking up just one point from trips to Bournemouth, Newcastle United and Chelsea. Now they have won three of their last four games at home.
Can Brighton reverse this late on Saturday or can Arsenal keep the pressure on Liverpool with another win?
Arsenal head to the south coast to take on Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend.
Brighton drew 2-2 with Aston Villa in their last game. In singles that was a good result, but Fabian Horzler’s men are now without a win in seven games.
Disappointingly, the fixture list was not unduly kind during that period. Arsenal will be the first opposition from the current top seven that Brighton have faced since November.

Maybe the Seagulls will raise their game against the Gunners. They might actually prefer to face a team that neither sits deep nor allows them to dominate possession.
But even without Saka, Arsenal should have enough of them to come out on top at the Amex Stadium.

Brighton’s offense hasn’t been firing on all cylinders lately. Prior to the Aston Villa game, the Seagulls had scored more than one goal in just one of their previous six games.
That said, Brighton usually manage to find the back of the net at least once. They have done just that in all but two of their 19 matches this term. Only Liverpool has a better record in this regard.
Furthermore, both teams have scored in 15 of Brighton’s games so far, joint-highest in the Premier League with Brentford.
Arsenal’s backline, well controlled by William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhas, doesn’t miss much.
However, in this situation, we think that there will be at both ends and at least three goals in total.

It looked like Jesus’ career at Arsenal was coming to an end, but the Brazil international has once again established himself as a mainstay.
Five goals in two December games against Crystal Palace brought Jesus back from the cold. He scored again in the win over Brentford and is sure to remain in the starting line-up this week.
Jesus has never been the deadliest finisher, but he showed a hunter’s instincts when he nodded home on New Year’s Day.
The former Manchester City player also likes to be involved in the formation of the team and create chances for others.
Anyway, we like Jesus to have a direct role in Arsenal’s goal against Brighton.
