Not so long ago, Bournemouth claimed relegation and Everton claimed Europe. Now the roles are reversed.
In fact, going into 2025, the Cherries are sixth in the Premier League standings. They’ve enjoyed a fantastic first half of the season under Andoni Irvola, who is doing so well that Bournemouth fans fear he’ll be poached by a club higher up the food chain.
Iraola’s team is currently unbeaten in seven games. They almost lost to Fulham last weekend, but Dango Otara stepped up with an 89th minute equaliser. Only Liverpool and Arsenal have gone longer without losing in the Premier League.
And it’s no coincidence that expected goal difference, a measure of the quality of chances a team creates and takes, ranks Bournemouth as the third best performing team in the division to date, behind Liverpool and Arsenal.
It took some time for Iraola to share his ideas at the Vitality Stadium, but he has now developed a facet into his image. Bournemouth may be the strongest pressing team in the Premier League. They don’t worry too much about possession, instead focusing on getting the ball into dangerous areas and going straight for the opposition’s throat.
Everton are similarly unassuming about their share of the ball. While Bournemouth are 16th in possession at the time of writing, Everton are 20th out of 20.
However, as they don’t press with the same intensity as Bournemouth, Everton are a much duller watch. Many fans would like Sean Dyche to be replaced as manager, although that would be risky at this stage of the season given the 53-year-old’s track record of keeping teams in the league.
At their best, Everton are a determined and tenacious team. They showed these qualities in consecutive draws against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City in December.
But the Toffees have to offer more in the future. Admittedly, their squad is one of the weakest in the league and Dyche doesn’t exactly have top-notch talent in attack, even if Illiman Nadayeh is having a good season.
Everton fans will still want to see more ambition from their side, but Dyche is unlikely to burst into form against Bournemouth.
Everton make the long trip to the south coast this weekend to take on Bournemouth.
Bournemouth has tough games ahead. In the next few weeks they are set to face Chelsea, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and Liverpool.
Bournemouth may drop a few places after that run, but it would be equally difficult for any of these teams.

Saturday’s meeting with Everton is arguably their best chance of victory before the trip to Southampton in mid-February.
It will be a different test for Bournemouth, who will have a far greater share of possession than usual.
With Iraola’s attacking quality, the host should win against Everton.

Wolverhampton and Tottenham Hotspur are the most entertaining teams in the Premier League this season based on the goals they have in their games.
At the end of this list is Everton. Their 18-game average in the 2024/25 season is just 2.17 goals per 90 minutes, the lowest figure in the division.
61% of the Toffees’ games in the top flight have scored under 2.5 goals and we expect a similar result here.
Bournemouth will have to be patient to break down Everton’s defence. For all their struggles, it’s remarkable that only six teams have conceded fewer goals than Deutsche’s men.
On the south coast, flowers can be increased or decreased.

Ovanilsson has proven to be a good replacement for Dominic Solanke, who left Bournemouth for Tottenham last summer.
The Brazilian is more of a front-to-goal striker than Solanke, who is better at keeping the ball up and winning physical battles with opposition centre-backs.
But Evanilsson comes to life inside the penalty area. His latest strike against Fulham was his fifth of the season.
It’s not a spectacular return, but Evanilsson is a work in progress and he’s shown a lot of potential. Iraola has managed him shrewdly, occasionally leaving him out of the squad as he continues to adapt to English football.
The former Porto player’s sharpness in and around the 18-yard box could help him find the back of the net against Everton.
