In the absence of captain Jasprit Bumrah, India beat Australia by 181 runs on an extraordinary second day of the fifth Test on Saturday, posting a total of 141-6 for 145 runs.
On a day of high drama at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Bumrah took the first wicket to lead India but left with the team doctor after lunch due to back pain.
Parsed Krishna (3-42), Mohammad Siraj (3-51) and Nitish Kumar Reddy went into the gap with their captain’s impressive bowling that saw Australia beat Australia and India by four runs at tea. The forward took a small lead in the first innings.
There was still spice on the wicket though, and paceman Scott Boland took 4-42 in the final session to add to his four-wicket haul on Friday, as Australia overcame the Indian batting and between dig deep into order
Rishabh Pant produced some extraordinary shots with a stunning 28-ball half-century to prevent a burnout but he too was bowled in the final hour for 61, Australian captain Pat Cummins taking his 14th wicket of the day.
There was still time for Boland to claim his fourth victim in the form of Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja who was eight not out and Washington Sunder who was not out for a six at the end of the game.
A crowd of 47,257 enjoying the Sydney sunshine certainly got their money’s worth as the momentum swung back and forth, as the series ended, with Australia leading 2-1.
Newbie all-rounder Bev Webster, who top-scored for Australia with 57, cheered for the rafters with his half-century and then later in the day he bowled Shubman Gayle for 13 to take his maiden Test wicket. removed
Virat Kohli, standing in as India’s captain after Bumrah’s departure, walked to the crease for what is likely to be his last innings in Australia and returned to the boundary rope after Boland bowled him. Caught in a terrible six at slip.
Boland is fast becoming a cult hero in Australia and perhaps the loudest buzz came when he bowled the pitch to remove opener Yashaswi Jaiswal off stump for a remarkable 22nd innings. finish
The Indian supporters also had a lot to cheer about, starting with Bumrah’s dismissal of Marnes Leboschen in the morning session to take his streak to 32 wickets at an average of 13.06.
Krishna also had the flags flying for India when he dismissed Steve Smith for 33 in the slips to break a 57-run partnership with Webster, leaving the former Australian captain five short of 10,000 Test runs.
India, who dropped captain Rohit Sharma for the match, need to win in Sydney to level the series and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
India may be without Bumrah for the fifth Test against Australia after he left the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday for a scan on a back problem.
This fast bowler, who has been the most effective player in the five-match series so far, went to the field with the doctor of the Indian team about an hour after the lunch break.
“He had back pain,” his teammate Prasad Krishna told reporters after the game.
“He’s gone for a scan and the medical team is monitoring him, so we’ll know when the medical team gets back to us.
“No matter who is leading us as a team, I think we are very well prepared as a bowling unit. The plan was very clear even when Bumrah was not there.”
Krishna took 3-42 as India bowled out Australia for 181 runs on Saturday, but they were only 145 runs ahead at the end of the game with four wickets in hand, three if Bumrah was unable to bowl.
His absence will be all the more noticeable if Australia are chasing a relatively small victory target, as the captain has taken 32 wickets at an average of 13.06 in the series so far.
“If he wasn’t there, India would have had to come up with a new plan,” Australian coach Andrew McDonald said.
“He’s the leading wicket-taker in the series, so you’d say that’s going to be a bit beneficial for us. He can bowl at any surface, anywhere. He’s always a threat. We know that in Coming into the series, an incredibly talented bowler.”
