Aaron Rodgers left Week 17 with another NFL record, but not the one he wanted.
Rodgers is heading into the final game of his two-year stint with the New York Jets and has yet to snap the team’s playoff drought, which is a US sports-leading 14 seasons.
However, Rodgers needs to throw just one more touchdown to become only the second quarterback to throw for 500 touchdowns in fewer than 250 games.
It’s a feat only accomplished by Peyton Manning — not Tom Brady, Dan Marino or Joe Montana — and for Rodgers, the games are now over.
Still, the 40-year-old entered Orchard Park to face the Buffalo Bills with 14 touchdowns in his last eight games and no interceptions, his TD in a Week 16 loss to the Rams putting him on the brink of history. .
The feeling was that the former Green Bay Packers quarterback was coming to the Jets to celebrate in a miserable season.
But standing on the brink, he was left to ponder the gradual lowering of standards after a miserable afternoon in Western New York.
Rodgers completed 12 of 18 passes against the Buffalo Bills for 112 yards, but left the game in the second half with no touchdowns and two interceptions.
Instead, Rodgers walked away with another NFL record, but not the one he wanted.
He was sacked four times on the day, the third of which surpassed Tom Brady’s total for the most sacks in an NFL career.
It’s a testament to Rodgers’ longevity that he made it, but it was a bad day at the office.
To make matters worse, with the Jets trailing 40-0, Rodgers’ replacement, Tyrod Taylor, came on to hold the Jets to just two touchdowns on the afternoon.
Rodgers is now 247 games short of the streak, but with his future in doubt, he may have just one more game to go.
The Jets face the Miami Dolphins at MetLife Stadium, but Rodgers has said he hasn’t made a decision about whether to stay with the Jets or even play there — adding another hint of drama to his two-year spell in the Big Apple.
The Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos great Manning combined for 244 points to reach the mark.
Tom Brady (649 touchdown passes) and Drew Brees (571) join Hall of Famers Pro Manning (539) and Brett Favre (508) on an elite list of players who could make it.
The closest active player is Matthew Stafford, who has 377 in 222 games.
Patrick Mahomes is on pace to beat Manning and Rodgers with 245 passing yards in just 112 games.
Davante Adams’ first catch was Aaron Rodgers’ 200th career pass.
In 2020, Adams caught Rodgers’ 400th touchdown pass while both were with the Green Bay Packers.
He is well aware of his place in history and was disappointed to get number 500.
“Obviously I would love to,” Adams said, via ESPN . I got 200, I got 400, so Getting 500 is doping.
Adams and Rodgers will try again in Week 18, when the Jets end a 4-12 season that saw the firing of head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas.
A major rebuild is underway in New Jersey, and whether Rodgers gets his big moment this season, he also has franchise history in mind.
