In the 57th minute, Michael Laudrup and John Sivebaek put Denmark 3-1 up in a game they would win 4-1. A minute later, the lerby disappeared and the clock began to tick.
After a quick shower – against the hoeness’ wishes – they left the airport behind a police escort. The flight went to plan.
So far, so good – until the drive from Dusseldorf Airport to Bochum’s stadium.
“The traffic was three, four kilometers because the stadium was in the city,” recalled the 67-year-old Lerby.
“So I had to jump out of the car and run four kilometers to the dressing room. That’s good heat.”
But Lerby will cool down on the bench because Bayern Coach Udo Lattek has named the starting line.
“I was very weak because I wanted to play from the beginning. But I came in at half time and then there was extra time and the result was 2-2.”
Lerby scored in the replay, which Bayern won 2-0 and went on to lift the cup by beating Stuttgart in the end.
But as impressive as the success sounds, he never thought it was that special.
“I remember sitting in the bar after the Bochum match,” added Lerby. “I took a beer and I thought a good job’. But that’s the only thing. I don’t think it’s a great success.
“In our time, there is a lot of chaos. We are many times in big trouble. You play for the National Team and the club has a match so you are not allowed to go (to the national team).”
Almost exactly two years later, hoeness also convinced Mark Hughes to play another cup match for Bayern on the same day as he played for Walechoslovakia.
Whether the welcher received a bonus for his efforts is not known, but it is a point that Lerby could raise with a companion.
“I’ll ask him next time, that’s for sure,” he said. “I say, Something’s missing, Uli!”
