El Ghazi was originally suspended in Mainz on 17 October, following a post on social media that included the controversial phrase “from the river to the sea” – a pro-Palestinian message which critics say is the destruction of Israel.
But that interpretation is disputed by some Pro-Palestinian activists who say that most of the people singing it are calling for the Israeli occupation of Gaza.

Former Ajax, Lille, Aston Villa Willa Spatulo returned to the squad three days later, saying he stood “for peace above all else”.
However, El Ghazi revealed, he did not approve the club’s statement confirming his return and Mainz after responding to the player’s statements and social media posts”.
After his victory in court last year, El Ghazi pledged 500,000 euros (£441,000) in his Pay-off from the Club to the children of Gaza “affected by the conflict.
“I hope that Mainz, despite their repeated failed attempts to avoid making the appropriate payments, will heal in the knowledge that they have little to do for the children of Gaza,” said El Ghazi in July 2024.
The 30-year-old joined Cardiff City after leaving Mainz, but now plays for Al-Sa-Saarya in Qatar.
