Luka Modric’s former team-mate, David Bentley, has told Liverpool they should “keep” Florian Wertz, who is “exactly the same” as the Croatian icon.
Liverpool Splash around $450 million on new signings in the summer. Wirtz He was the second most expensive of them all, commanding $116 million after a stellar season of 16 goals and 15 assists with Bayer Leverkusen.
So far in the infield, his production has been nowhere close. The attacking midfielder has three assists to her name, isn’t touching the ball nearly as often, and what she does provide, at times, goes to waste.
The physicality of the league has clearly knocked him out of his offering at times. The diminutive midfielder lost possession nine times against Manchester City, and was thwarted three times, as the Citizens kicked about him. He didn’t even attempt a single tackle.
Although Liverpool have tried to incorporate him into games in different scenarios and positions, little has been done with him so far, but he is highly regarded by Bentley, who feel they need to stick with him.
He said Sky Sports: “He’s an incredible player, so the talent, the fans and the pundits have to live with him. Yes, he is exactly that (as is Modric).
“When Modric walked through the door, the way he received the ball, he scanned, he knew what he was doing. He was an incredibly technically gifted player, and both could set the tone and tempo of a football match, so you have to be with him.”
Modric and Wirtz have similar statures, both under 5-foot-8, and neither physically the most dominant.
As a result, they have to play differently as a player who can easily put an opponent away. Wirtz is clearly an amazing distributor, with 70 assists to his name in club soccer already.

He needs to find himself in pockets of space where he’s not being bullied as easily, though, so he’s able to make his passes count.
It’s not just a personal issue, his teammates need to realize they can put him in danger by giving him the ball.
Once he gels more on his side and finds himself in his positions without the risk of being cocky or just plain out, the German’s qualities are likely to shine.
For example, when he assisted twice in the same game against Eintracht Frankfurt, Wertz was dropped behind the defense for the first time, able to pick up a perfect pass to Hugo Ektyk, before drawing a defender to him before offloading into space to Dominik Szobszalai, who scored from range.
