Masked gang tries to kidnap Champions League star, 27, outside grocery store – before telling police it was a ‘birthday prank’

An international football star escaped an attempted kidnapping by a masked gang.

Russian police have arrested multiple suspects for the failed attempt to abduct Zenit St. Petersburg midfielder Andrei Mostovoy on Thursday last week.

Mostovoy, who has played in the Champions League, had exited a luxury grocery store when men wearing balaclavas set upon him and tried to move him into their minivan.

The 27-year-old manager to run free and alert the police about the malicious group, who initially remained at large afterwards.

Horrific footage shows the gang clambering out of a black van before rushing towards Mostovoy and another man, then sprinting back to their vehicle when their would-be victims got away.

And the rampaging gang stood accused of attempting to kidnap a businessman a couple of days later, according to the Moscow Times and native Russian media, before the police finally got their hands on them.

As per the Moscow Times, they allegedly abducted Sergei Selegen, the son-in-law of a Russian politician, on Saturday.

They handcuffed him and demanded a £110,000 ransom. At gunpoint, Selegen handed over £2,000.

Police claim they managed to track down a Toyota Land Cruiser and free Selegen before detaining four suspects, with a fifth later arrested too.

That fifth suspect allegedly told the police that it had all been a ‘birthday prank’.

They now face criminal charges including kidnapping, robbery and attempted kidnapping, as stated by Russia’s Investigative Committee.

Neither Mostovo nor Zenit have commented on the incidents.

The midfielder has been with the St. Petersburg giants since 2019 and helped them to four Russian Premier League titles in that time.

He has also won the Russian Cup once and the Russian Super Cup four times.

His form has seen him become a regular for Russia down the years and he has accumulated 20 caps.

While they are banned from taking part in competitive FIFA and UEFA matches, they have still been playing friendly games.

Over the recent international break, Valery Karpin’s side beat Iran 2-1 and Bolivia 3-0.
