Initially, Liverpool appeared to struggle in the system and once again their defensive frailties were exposed as they were cut open by Eintracht Frankfurt Counter for the opener.
Liverpool have now conceded 18 goals in 13 games this season – compared to seven in the same period last term – while Frankfurt have not kept a clean sheet in their last eight games.
But they really grew into the game and the system and in the second half their high pressure football was even more impressive.
Clearly, they are also taking their chances this season with five different players scoring.
“I think it could be a long-term system for the slot, but time will tell on that,” former Liverpool Full-Back Stephen Warnock Sport.
He added: “There’s always going to be little glitches in a new system, it’s not entirely bad.
“Also away from home, it was difficult to adjust at the start of a game, but soon they were in control and comfortable with their play.
“I thought that Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones were good in the game, on the ball and coming to Liverpool, but it’s about knowing your defensive responsibility as well.
“They learn as the game goes on. Sometimes you get old habits where you go and stay in your position, but you don’t have to make a run, but you don’t have to re-do that in your position
While the ISAK-Ekitike partnership lasted only 45 minutes, some of the spectators were treated to the prospect of them playing more games together.
“I love it,” former Manchester United Stratser Andy Cole told BBC Sport. “They are both at a good age, bought for the future.
“I can see them playing as two, because if they do it at the end it will cause chaos. They both have speed, ability and willingness to take players.”
Ekitike’s goal against Frankfurt was his sixth for the Reds, with the striker performing the best of all Liverpool’s summer signings.
“I think Ekitike is the best player,” former Manchester United Midfielder Owen Hargreaves told TNT Sports.
“He should be a guaranteed starter now. He’s everywhere now. He’s a pure player, a beautiful football player.”
