According to ex-Premier League midfielder Burley, Kerkes’ struggle to adapt at Liverpool is not being helped by his captain Van Dijk, who made that clear with him during the recent 2-1 loss to Manchester United – a fourth straight defeat in all competitions.

“He is swallowing the pressure of going to these big football clubs with these big expectations, but I don’t think it helps when your captain looks at him every two minutes and blames him or digs him.

Van Dijk himself was not happy with how the game turned out, saying afterwards: “I think we conceded a very sloppy second goal. We worked really hard to get back into the game and we created a lot of chances to score the winner, but if you concede a second goal like that, that’s the disappointing part.
“If you look at the game as a whole, we were too quick. I think they were very patient, they didn’t give us high but they didn’t let us have the ball.
“We still created a lot of chances to score, but the fact is we lost. It’s an exciting time because we have to stick together not just as players but as a club and fans who want us to win.”
