“I’ve heard Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink talking about him in that England squad and what a leader he is and the players look up to him and they look up to him at Man United too.
“He could have completely dropped the tools and wanted to leave the football club when he took the armband off and that’s not easy for any player.
“When that happens your pride takes a huge hit and he has to be there and support Bruno as captain and not play every game and last ten minutes of games.
“Coming on today (against Liverpool) and really playing again and showing his leadership and being a threat as well, set pieces are very important.”

As for his contract situation with Man, Maguire admitted: “I’ve been here for seven years now, so it hasn’t been difficult. It’s been on my mind a bit. I’m in my last year now, so it might be the last time I play at Anfield for this club, so I’m bummed to come here because it’s stuck in my mind.”
On scoring the winner at Anfield, Maguire added: “Amazing moment. Some great, great times at this club and some great winners,” he said. “Obviously to get a winner in Lyon and then at Anfield is a great moment for me, a great moment for my family, and yes, I’m really proud.
“I didn’t know where I was when I let it in.
“But when I wore down to the other end I felt like I needed to celebrate in front of the United fans. They’ve been amazing with me throughout my time. We know how important the game is to our fans.
“Last year we did really well and I probably had a chance to win it, so it’s a big win for myself, for every player, for the staff, for Robben. But more importantly, a big win for our fans because it’s tough for them.”
