Jurgen Klopp’s pain over the death of Diogo Jota: The trainer who played for the tragic star of Liverpool breaks down when talking about the loss of a ‘family member’

The ex-coach of Liverpool, Jürgen Klopp, has been sincere about the tragic death of Diogo Jota and has affirmed that it was like losing a member of the family.

The Reds striker died in an accident together with his brother André Silva at the beginning of July, and Klopp said that he sat in silence for a long time after hearing the devastating news about the man who signed Wolves.

Speaking to the Diary of a CEO podcast, Red Bull’s now head of football operations said: ‘I can’t imagine the locker room right now without his presence. That also goes for the boys.’

“Nobody in Liverpool will use it as an excuse…. I’m very close to James Milner, very close to Kostas Tsimiskas, that’s Luna y Marte.” Tratarlo a nivel personal… Impossible.

“I received a message in the morning saying that it was bad news from a friend of Liverpool, and I couldn’t believe it.” No era posible. Lo escuché y sé lo que significa.

‘I saw all the photos from the wedding and the boys were there… I know exactly where I was and how long I sat without saying a word.’

‘It’s exactly like a member of the family. It’s an example of the things you have to deal with without knowing anything. You can’t be prepared… you have to solve things you didn’t expect.

‘I was impressed by his presence, (he was) a very special young man.’

Klopp and Jota enjoyed a great relationship after he made the move from the Midlands in 2020 for 41 million pounds.

The Portuguese international signed a new contract of five years, not much time after making an instant impact at Anfield.

Jota scored 65 goals in 182 games with the Reds before his death, with his best days coming under Klopp, winning the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup together. In addition, they reached the final of the Champions League in 2022.

The German left the club in 2024, replaced by Arne Slot, but maintained a close relationship with many people at the club, including Jota.

Meanwhile, Klopp enjoyed life at Red Bull and confirmed his desire to never train another team, although he did not rule out returning to the bench for several years.

“He said that he would never coach a different team, a different team in England,” explained Klopp.

‘So that means… if then it’s Liverpool, yes. Theoretically it is possible.

‘I don’t even know exactly. I love what I do now. I don’t miss Sir Trainer. I do coach – not players – and I don’t miss it.

‘I don’t miss standing in the rain for two and a half or three hours and I don’t miss going to the press conference three times a week, having 12 interviews a week. I don’t miss it, no.

‘I don’t miss being in the costume room… I coach 180-odd games, so I was in a very small costume room and I don’t want to die in the costume room just because it’s nice. It smells bad!

I am 58 years old. That’s it, from your perspective, man. But from the other side it is not. That means that he could make the decision within a few years.

‘Don’t know. Do I have to make a decision today? I won’t be a coach again, but thank God I don’t have to.

‘Ya veré lo que me depara el futuro. But now I’m involved in a project that I really love, and I love the people I work with and the clubs I’m responsible for.
