Kane tells Liverpool star to ‘look in the mirror’ as Reds face fourth successive defeat

Roy Keane has told Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk to “start with the man in the mirror” after the Reds lost 2-1 to Manchester United on Sunday.

The defeat against the Red Devils was their fourth in a row after losses to Crystal Palace, Galatasaray and Chelsea before the international break.

Liverpool Five points clear in the Premier League after five matches – but three league defeats in a row later and the Reds Four points off the leaders.

Van Dijk has largely avoided criticism of Liverpool’s performances this season but Kane believes the Reds captain needs to look in the mirror at his part in recent poor displays.

Ken said Sky Sports: “When you’re a centre-half and a big player, and last year everyone was about who stays and he signs a big contract and then you give up a lot of goals, then I’ll be looking at him.

“I’m (thinking) ‘What am I doing?’

“Well they scored two today and they scored two last year and you’re the center of this team, always start with the man in the mirror.

“We talk about (Harry) Maguire today and Bruno (Fernandes). But Van Dijk, if you’re a centre-half and your team is suddenly conceding a lot of goals and you’re looking good yourself, you have to take a good look and wonder, am I really helping these guys, am I getting people’s attention?”.

Keane believes Van Dijk has a role to play in helping Liverpool concede late goals, adding: “The biggest challenge when you become champions is next year because people see you going ‘You’re the champions, we’re going after you.’ Even today Muttahida was coming.

“United’s attacking players had a bit of a fight about them, while Liverpool struggled to cope.

“We’re talking about statistics and I think a really important stat in football is the scoreline. Last year Liverpool won a lot of games with the odd goal, they’re on the wrong side of it now. They’re conceding too many late goals.

“Liverpool, just before the goal, almost gifted him the ball away cheaply. These are the moments where Van Dijk tells the players to ‘take it easy’.”

“I think sometimes it’s good to force things and panic, but not all the time. I felt like that from the first half.”
