Jose Mourinho: Why does the Benfica manager love Newcastle?

Those at the top of Barcelona initially wanted someone with connections to the club to be Sir Bobby’s assistant, but he insisted it should be Murinho.

For good reason.

Sir Bobby walks into a divided club after the departure of owner Johan Colyff and needs someone he trusts in another foreign language.

By this stage, Mourinho’s role had been greatly enhanced.

He helped train the land. He produced a Scouting Dossier in opposition which Sir Bobby labeled as the best he had ever seen. Over time, he was used to face international players.

In a surrounding environment, the pair complement each other again as explained by Midfielder Guillermo Amor.

“They were able to create a good environment and create a strong team,” he said.

“Jose has a lot of contact with the players because of his ability to speak the language and his age, which is very similar to ours.

“He has a lot of respect for Bobby and Bobby has a lot of faith in everything Jose can do on the field and in the locker room.”

Sir Bobby went on to win the European Cup, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Cup in his last season at Louis Gaal Gaal.

Syminho told him that Sir Bobby wanted to leave the loyalty but he was convinced to stay Van Gaal about the merits of fulfilling his assistant.

Had Mourinho not spent three more years at the Nou camp under Van Gaal, the Portuguese would have followed Sir BOBby to Newcastle in 1999.

Of course he was alone – but Sir Bobby’s influence lives on.

To this day, Mourinho loves those moments that the Pair families shared sites, the meals that Sir Bobby did not allow him to pay for and the lessons that he taught him about life.

That’s why the 62-year-old considers himself a “little Magpie”.

“Club Up there knows how much love and respect I have for them,” he told CBS earlier this month. “I knew the love was from Mr. Robson.”
