The EFL returns on New Year’s Day to mark the start of the new calendar year, with 68 of the 72 teams on Wednesday.

1. Burnley to beat Stoke at home (Wednesday, 15:00)
Burnley extended their current unbeaten run to 11 games between Christmas and New Year, including a statement win away to league leaders Sheffield United that moved them within two points of the automatic promotion places.
Meanwhile, Stoke travel to Lancashire with just one win from their last 10 games and just four points above the relegation zone.
The Clarets are unbeaten at Turf Moor in all competitions this season, while the Potters have lost all three of their last games on the road.
2. West Brom beat Preston at home (Wednesday, 3pm)
West Brom enter the new year having lost just two of their last 16 games in 2024 and are currently just one point behind the top six as they seek promotion to the Premier League.
The Baggies are now unbeaten in their last seven matches at the Hawthorns, where Preston visit on New Year’s Day, and have won just once away from home all season.
The Lancashire side traveled to the West Midlands on Wednesday afternoon seven points behind their opponents in 14th place.
3. Wycombe to beat Exeter at home (Wednesday, 3pm)
Wycombe enter 2025 having lost just one of their last 20 league games in 2024, a torrid run that saw them start the year in third place in League One, just one point off the automatic promotion places. And two points behind league leaders Birmingham.
They take on an Exeter side with just two wins in their last nine league games, which has seen them drop to 13th in the bottom half of the table.
The Chairboys are unbeaten at home in the league since their first home game this season.
4. Crewe to beat Carlisle at home (Wednesday, 3pm)
Just one defeat in League Two since September has left Crewe a point off second in the table heading into the new year.
The Cheshire side have lost just once at home all season and that came in their first home game of the season on matchday two.
Meanwhile, Carlisle are second in the EFL table with 18 points from their 22 games so far and are fourth-lowest this season.
