There’s always something on the line, even when it seems like there isn’t.
Week 18 of this year’s NFL season carries little weight in terms of postseason implications.
Of the 14 possible playoff teams, 12 have already been decided, and many have already been determined.
This year, Week 18 will bring excitement for the bottom-of-the-table teams as they look to make it to the top.
In the weekend, there are four teams with three losses and five teams with four losses.
Simply put, there have been an unusual amount of really bad teams this year, and with one game to go, the top ten teams in this year’s draft are anything but rocky.
currently, New England Patriots We currently have the #1 pick in the draft, but a win against it Buffalo billbackup, and Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns Or the New York Giants could all join the top with a loss.
The Giants had the No. 1 pick heading into last weekend before pulling off the upset Indianapolis Coltsand now they’re picking fourth.
The draft order has never been so volatile at the top.
The question arises, what do the players and coaches of these teams want to do?
While front offices would probably prefer to miss out and secure a higher pick, there’s no tanking in the NFL.
Not when these coaches and players are fighting for a living.
Not in a game as brutal and physical as football.
Former NFL player-turned-analyst Jason Bell said players play for their jobs regardless of how a win or loss affects the team’s future.
“As a player, your only CV is what you put on film,” Bell told talkSPORT in an exclusive interview.
What’s going on on tape, what teams are watching and how are you going to be evaluated, especially at the end of the season if you’re struggling?
“You want to be the type of player that no matter what happens, you go out there and you want to fight, you want to win because that’s what they think about when they play. Building a team
“You have about ten stars on your team, they are your kids.
“The rest of the team is basically made up of people with character, right?
“You have to be good, you have to play well, but that’s who you are day in and day out.
“It’s evaluated when wins and losses don’t necessarily matter, knowing who you are, how you prepare and how you step into the game and play?”
When asked about the Las Vegas Raiders going from the No. 1 pick to No. 8 in a three-week span, Bell, who is close with head coach Antonio Pierce, said his team is still fighting to win, and that’s important. For culture
Bell said: Think about the head coach who is my friend.
He plays to win and the players respond to him and play for him because they respect him.
“How your team goes out there and plays is a direct reflection of your head coach because they play for him and you see teams don’t care about draft picks.”
You know what a draft pick means to me? Someone takes my position.
“You want to raise that boy.
“If he plays my position, I don’t have a job. So of course you try to stop it.
There’s a conflict of interest when you think about it, but we’re the players on the field and the coaches are coaching for their jobs and their legacies.
“We are trying to win.”
This is not NBAthis is not a tank, just playing for work and your next contract.
