The broadcaster was forced to apologize as Michael Van Gerwen makes an X-rated comment in a post-defeat interview with Luke Littler.

Sky Sports has apologized after Michael van Gerwen referred to himself as an “old b******” after losing the World Darts final.

Van Groen’s record as the sport’s youngest world champion was broken on Friday night when he lost 7-3 to Luke Littler at Alexandra Palace.

Littler raced to a 4-0 lead and despite a valiant fightback from the Dutchman, the 17-year-old prevailed to claim his first world title.

Van Gerwen’s slow start proved unsavory in the exhibition match, but he greeted Littler in honorable defeat.

However, Van Gerwen dropped a curse word during his post-game interview.

“I was 4-0 down … I thought I wasn’t doing it justice, but it is,” Van Gerwen said of his slow start.

“So you have to fight and come back. I think after 4-0 I think I was definitely not the worst player.”

But fair play to him.

“I sometimes say that every 17 years a star is born and he is one of them.”

Van Gerwen later added, “I’m an old man compared to him!”

Sky reporter Abigail Davies quickly apologized after van Gerwen cursed.

After the euphoria of winning the title, Littler managed to control his mouth.

“I can’t believe it. We both played really well,” he told Sky Sports.

“I’ve said in interviews that I had to get off to a fast start tonight, and that’s what I did. But he was behind me the whole game, those cover shots — he hit two triples and I had to come. Come back with two threes.

“Everyone dreams of winning this trophy. You have to go through a tough field. I can’t believe it.

I’m going to keep talking about this, but the first match against Ryan Mikel (in the second round) was really important, and I’ve been coming to that the whole time.

“At 2-0 (in the final set) I started to get nervous, but I told myself to calm down.

Luke Littler took on Michael van Gerwen in the World Championship final, smashing an incredible record and winning the £500,000 prize.
