Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford is set to miss Sunday’s Premier League trip to leaders Liverpool due to illness.
Rashford, 27, has been out of manager Ruben Amorim’s team for four games, initially because of his poor performance in training and his attitude towards club-mates.
Meanwhile, Amorim confirmed that the club will trigger the option to extend former captain Harry Maguire’s current deal until 2026.
But he added that Maguire “needs to develop as a leader because we are starved of leaders on the pitch”.
Amorim brought Rashford back into the fold for the home defeat to Newcastle on 30 December, only to leave him on the bench as United suffered a fourth straight defeat and a third successive game without a goal. .
Serie A title contenders Napoli are the latest club to be linked with Rashford, with United ready to make a loan move if his wages, which are in excess of £300,000 a week, are covered.
United are 14th in the league table heading into the weekend’s games.
With skipper Bruno Fernandes and midfielder Manuel Ugarte returning from suspension at Anfield, it is uncertain whether Rashford will be in Amorim’s squad.
But the former Sporting boss dismissed the possibility.
“Right now he is sick,” Amorim said. “He didn’t train and this week he didn’t.”
Asked about Rashford’s position within the club, he added: “It’s the same situation. We’ll see in the future, but it’s like a normal player and then I’ll make a choice.”
