Arsenal end nightmare run as Gabriel Jesus continues incredible revival

Arsenal then put Brentford away with two strikes in the space of three minutes early in the second half.

Mikel Merino found himself in the right place at the right time as Brentford failed to clear their lines from a cross and smashed home from close range after the ball had settled in the hosts’ 18-yard box.

Gabriel Martinelli Arsenal’s third goal came in the 53rd minute when Brentford once again failed to deal with a cross.

The Bees defended Ethan Navaneri’s shot in the area but the ball went straight to Martinelli, who controlled the ball before firing an unstoppable volley.

Martinelli’s strike was his third in his last three away games for Arsenal and helped Arteta’s side beat Brentford.

Arsenal’s third goal killed Brentford fans and the team, who simply could not cope with the change of gear of the visitors.

The win moved Arsenal into second place in the Premier League table, overtaking Nottingham Forest in the process.

However, they are six points behind league leaders Liverpool, who also have a game in hand against the Gunners.

As for Brentford, the loss extended their winless run to five matches and was their second successive defeat at home having previously gone unbeaten all season.

Despite the defeat, the Bees are in 12th place with 24 points.

Thomas Frank’s side have a golden chance to snap their winless run when they travel to bottom-placed Southampton on January 4.

Arsenal are also in action on the same day as they head south to Brighton, who are in the middle of a seven-game winless run.
