Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulenstein believes the Red Devils are “replicating exactly what they did with Erik ten Hag” by appointing Ruben Amorum.
Amorim Replaced Ten Hague in the United dugout in November but has failed to moderate United’s slide. If anything, they have gotten worse under the Portuguese manager.
Like Ten Hague when the Dutchman left Ajax, Amorim arrived at Old Trafford as one of Europe’s most highly-rated coaches, resurrecting a sleeping giant in Sporting.

Despite leading United to their worst Premier League and Champions League campaigns in 2023/2024, Ten Hague kept his job in the summer, with the FA Cup final win over Manchester City cementing the new co-owner’s and football’s Did enough to stop the chief. Sir Jim Ratcliffe from Making a Change.
But Ten Hague didn’t last long this season and Amorim has been left to pick up the pieces, with changes in style and formation proving difficult with little time for training in a relentless fixture schedule.
Meulenstein – who worked as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant from 2008 to 2013 – is an admirer of Amorim’s style, but is concerned that his former club are making the same mistake they did in appointing Ten Hague. It was done.
“It has more to do with the hiring process than anything about his management style or coaching,” Melenstein said.
“You see when United went to The Hague. He was manager at Ajax in a minor league in Europe and he did really well, winning the league and doing well in the Champions League.

“It’s exactly the same style as Amorim in Portugal. Sporting, a minor league, do well, win the league, and do really well in the Champions League.
“He has a great footballing style about him; that’s where the similarities are. I think they’re two different characters with two different personalities.
“The way Amorim communicates compared to the way Ten Hague communicated, the way Amorim likes his team to play in a 3-4-3 is different from Ten Hague.
“But it was a concern for me that United actually copied what they did by appointing Ten Hague. They do exactly what they did with Amorim.
“Because Ten Hague had no experience in the Premier League, Amorim has no experience in the Premier League. When Ten Hague came in, everyone was nervous because of the way Ajax played.
“Man United have never played anywhere near the same attractive style with Ajax under Ten Hague. Now, Amorim comes in, and he says very clearly, ‘I’m going to play like this’.”
“But he’s got a whole different set of players, a whole different league, you know what I mean? So it’s very hard to recreate because it’s so different.”
