Sunderland were long top of the league but have slipped a bit with just two wins in their last five, now seven points adrift of top-placed Leeds and four adrift of Sheffield United.
Sunderland are doing well at home, but they have lost their last five defeats against the Blades in the Championship, between 2017 and 2024.
As a result, the Blades have won their last two away games at the Stadium of Light, having previously gone nine.
The Black Cats have an excellent record going into their opening game of the new year, unbeaten in their last six but drawing four.
Sheffield United, on the other hand, are winless in their last five league games in the opening league of the calendar year, drawing two and losing three.
Sheffield United and Sunderland don’t really have a clear striker in the Championship to be the top goalscorer.
For the Blades, they have Tyrese Campbell with six goals and Gustavo Hamer and Kiefer Moore with five goals each.
Sunderland’s top scorer in the league is Wilson Isidore, who has scored 6 goals in 21 games, and several others, including Jobe Bellingham, who have scored 4 goals each.
Moore has regained his form of late though with three goals in his last four games.
That’s combined with the fact that Sheffield United are a steep price to win on 90 minutes, but given that the two will battle it out consistently, a draw would be even better.
